L for Lemon and Lime

I plan and Allah is the greatest planner. I had to completely change what I was going to make due to the wet weather we had all day long. In the end Alhamdulillah, the children enjoyed themselves and went to bed smelling great.

We made lemon scrub instead of lemonade! The recipe is from here.

We started off by talking about the colour, shape, size and smell of lemons and limes. What were the differences. I used a zester to get some zest for the children to be able to really smell the fruits.

I also cut up some pickled lime I had for them to taste. It was hillarious to see everyone pick a piece so quickly and the spit it out at the same speed. It was super sour salty. I didn’t have time to capture those eeew expressions.

For this recipe the children got to use a hand juicer as well as a lemon press. Both requires different skills but aiming to achieve the same end result; extracting the juice.

I quartered my limes to get it to fit the press.

Mixing sugar, oil and juice thoroughly

I used olive oil instead of canola. Also I added whatever juice the children had squeezed out so as to not waste. Our scrub was a little runny for this reason. We also threw in all the zest to add colour to the scrub. Throughout the mixing process there was also lots of finger licking going on. They just could stop dipping their fingers in 🙂

After a long, warm, citrus bath, we shared this book.

A very attractive and unique illustration style. Gave DS2 something to think about. Do not disregard something that is different than what we are used to.


K for Kiwi Fruit

This was an interesting learning experience for me as well as for DS2. We started of by talking about the skin of the kiwi fruit. It is hairy to touch and it is all brown. The smell, well can’t describe.

Then we observed the inside of the fruit. The flesh was green and the most interesting thing to my son were the black seeds that formed a ring.

We went on the internet for a bit to learn about the fruit. I pulled out a picture of a kiwi bird to show its resemblance to the kiwi fruit. This was my attempt to show how close the two are.

Did you know that kiwi fruits originated in China and were known as Chinese gooseberries! That answers my question as to why the grocery stores are filled with chinese kiwis.

As for the recipe part. We made kiwi popsicle. I thought this will give DS2 a chance to use a potato masher instead of the usual plastic knife.

Once the fruit was throughly mashed, we added mango juice to it. I also added a little sugar syrup as the kiwi batch I had was on the sour side. We then poured the mixture into moulds and forgot about them (thank God).

Alhamdullillah we had a cold treat in the evening, Kiwi Popsicles.

J for Jello

I decided on making simple old jello for letter J. Nevertheless it was a fun project. We started of by observing the jello powder. I chose a strawberry (red) and an apple (green) one. DS2 touched the powder and also smelled it. We talked about the texture, colour and smell of it.

We used and over sized measuring cup for making the jello. This Alhamdulillah avoided any splash of hot liquid.

He was amazed that the “pink” powder became red when dropped in water. It did require a good bit of stirring to get all the granules to dissolve. I poured the jello into a rose shaped mould.

Getting to observe the jello setting was an interesting experience. DS2 did not want to touch it as he knew it was hot. Gradually when there was a film on the top he was excited about how wobbly it felt.

While waiting for the jello to set, we did some jello painting.

Due to the glare it is hard to see the formed jello on the letter J. The little bit of jello was getting mushy pretty fast and instead on painting with it, my child was licking it off the paint brush! If we ever did jello painting again, I would print my pictures on watercolour paper. I feel the colours will get absorbed and show better as well.

When the red jello had set, using a fork we gently made some marks on its surface. We made the green jello and poured in over the red.

I for Ice Cream

DS2’s name starts with an I. We had to make something special and different in its process. ICE  CREAM! We used a recipe I found in Kinder Krunchies – Healthy Snack Recipes for Children by Karen S. Jenkins. I double the recipe as per below.

The ingredients and steps.

Ingredients for ice cream

1/2 cup whipping cream

1/4 teaspoon vanilla essence

1 TABLESPOON maple syrup

a pinch of salt

Mixing ingredients in can surrounded by ice cubes

Mix the above ingredients in a metal can. We used an empty evaporated milk can. Stir until everything dissolves.

Sprinkle lots of salt. I covered the metal can to avoid any chances of salty ice cream.

Place the can in a larger container surrounded by ice cubes (we placed ours in the ice bowl right from the beginning). Sprinkle with lots of salt.

The instruction is to stir every 5 minutes for 30 minutes. Ours took about an hour before looking like ice cream. Alhamdulillah DS2 was very patient throughout the whole process. Possibly this was the first recipe we have done that he has been this patient. The things ice cream can do to children 🙂

Bee – Honey Jar Craft

I borrowed this book from the library to supplement our honey joys project. The illustrations in this book is completely done using paper cutouts. A very unique artwork. This books basically traces honey’s journey from flower to the breakfast table, but in reverse.

Remember our honey bottle in the ingredients picture from the last post, this is how it looks like now. I am not sure Papa was delighted. At this point I think he was just glad his Okanagan Valley honey was safe inside the “bee”.

Here are the steps to give a buzz to the plain old plastic honey jar.

Paint the bottle with yellow acrylic paint and let dry. You might have to give it a second coat.

Glue on black stripes

Drop some glue to the end of paper doily. Fold the ends and attach to the honey bottle. You can see one attached wing on the bottle.

Finish off by gluing on a heart shape for the head of the bee. Add some pipe cleaners for antennas and yellow foam (or googly eyes) for eyes.

This book also has a very nice game board you can play with your child. It reinforces the steps of how honey is made.

H for Honey

Alhamdulillah we chose honey as it is a sunnah food and has many healing properties.

Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Qur’an is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Qur’an and honey.

…   There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.

Surah An -Nahl Verse 69

This recipe is called Honey Joys and is from here. I use to make something similar with my mother. Hers had a dough to bind the cornflakes together this one does not. Nevertheless yummy as ever!

Mixing butter and honey

Only change I made to the recipe was to add some raisin, dried cranberries and chopped pecans . . . I had to add some chewy things as my Amma did 🙂

I would  NOT recommend adding raisins as they swell and then harden when the honey joys cool down. I know they worked fine in my mother’s doughy recipe, but not in this though. I spooned the corn flakes into the cup as they were hot! And leave them to really cool down. DS2 found out the hard way . . . ouch!

Alhamdulillah here are our crunchy, yummy honey joys . . . Papa couldn’t get enough of them 🙂
