Dome of Rock Structure

Alberta Grade 3 Science – Building Things and Testing Materials and Design.

For this topic DS1 had to build a structure (with parental guidance) and present it to the class. After considering many different buildings, he decided on the Dome of Rock. This was mainly based on the unique shape of the building but still not too complicated to build.

This project also gave us the opportunity to stress on the fact that this building is not Masjidul Aqsa. However it is still an important Islamic building and is part of the “blessed area”. It’s significance to us is in the rock that lies beneath the dome. It is the rock which Rasulullah (SAW) climbed onto prior to his ascension to the sky and heaven. You can see and learn more about this the Dome of Rock at Islamic Landmarks.

Below are picture of the actual structure we made.

We started off by making 8 of these sides using cardstock

Sides glued together

We created 4 pillar out of cardstock and attached them to the inside of the structure

We them made a circle large enough to cover the top of the structure out of cardstock. The circle was attached to the pillars by making slits on the pillars and gluing the circle down. The dome was a round styrofoam ball that we removed the bottom quarter of it and painted it with gold acrylic paint. The dome was glued onto the circle that was attached earlier.

All of the mosaic patterns were printed off the internet and carefully pasted onto the structure. Alhamdulillah we were proud of the end result.

These are the picture of our presentation board. I basically folded the poster board into a lapbook format. This made it much more organized for DS1 to present.

Insha-Allah I found a little booklet on this marvellous building at Friends of Al-Aqsa. You can access it here.
